a precedent study of a housing project by BARarkitekten in Berlin, Germany.
the Oderberger Str. 56, was designed to incorporate multiple uses, including the firm’s office. The 1st floor has a restaurant and a music room, the 2nd and 3rd floors have two-story work/live studios, and the 4th floor has larger 1/2/3 bedroom units.
the varying floor heights create complex units with 1-4 different levels. these different floor heights add extra floor area to the units and give the apartments a more spacious, house-like feel. the varying floor heights also give way to many double-height spaces, most of which face south for maximum sunlight.
overall circulation of the building is organized around a central staircase. the units all border the staircase, with some having multiple entry points into the unit from different sides of the stairs. multiple entries make it possible to subdivide the units into multiple smaller units, which can be used for multigenerational living, in-home caregivers, and home offices.
