Single-Stair Housing Report
August - October 2024 | Work completed at Utile
This report advocates for changing the building code in Massachusetts to allow single-stair residential buildings to be up to six stories tall. Boston Indicators commissioned Utile to produce Legalizing Mid-Rise Single-Stair Housing in Massachusetts: A Report on the Impact of Allowing Mid-Rise Point Access Blocks on Housing Design and Development in Greater Boston and Beyond. Using GIS we could identify parcels that would fit typical floor plates for single-stair buildings, revealing the impact this code change could have, unlocking thousands of new homes.
